Japan's new Prime Minister - Fumio Kishida

Fumio Kishida (岸田 文雄) has ascended into the position of Prime Minister of Japan, after winning the race to rule the Liberal Democratic Party last week. He will now face a wide range of difficulties, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan’s economic recovery, threats from North Korea, a rapidly ageing population, and increasing tensions with China.

Kishida, 64, was officially confirmed as the 100th Prime Minister of Japan. He served as the foreign minister under Shinzo Abe (安倍 晋三) from 2012 to 2017. He succeeds Yoshihode Suga (菅 義偉), who was Japan’s Prime Minister from the 16th of September 2020 to the 4th of October 2021.
