Colombia has captured its most feared drug lord – Otoniel

Dario Antonio Usuga, more commonly known as Otoniel, has been captured by Colombian authorities. This is considered the biggest blow to narcotrafficking in decades.

“This coup is comparable only to the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 90s”, said Iván Duque Márquez, Colombia’s president.

Otoniel was the leader of the extremely violent and heavily armed “Clan del Golfo”. It has been said that this cartel is comprised of former members of terrorist organizations.

President Duque’s speech was ended with the following: "To all criminals and narco-traffickers: either you surrender, or we will come and get you."

Some, however, believe that this will only create a power struggle, as other ruthless individuals will try to take Otoniel’s position. This could result in a cartel war, and many civilians could become casualties of it.
